Total Health :: essays research papers fc
Nutrition is the science that deals with food and how the body uses it. All living things need food to live. The food supplies energy, which people need to perform certain actions. Food also provides substances that the body needs to build and repair its tissues and to regulate its organs and organ systems. Food provides certain chemical substances needed in order for a person to maintain good health. These chemical substances are called nutrients. Nutrients can perform three important functions. They provide materials for building, repairing, or maintaining body tissues. They help regulate body processes. They serve as fuel to provide energy. The body needs energy to maintain all its functions. People who do not get enough nutrients are sometimes lazy and are unwilling to work. The foods we eat contain thousands of different chemicals. Our body, however, only needs only a few dozen of these chemicals in order to stay healthy. These are the nutrients that the body needs. Nutrients are divided into six main groups. They are (1)water, (2)carbohydrates, (3)fats, (4)proteins, (5)minerals, (6)vitamins. Water, carbohydrates, fats, and proteins are called macronutrients. Since macro means large, the body needs these four nutrients in large amounts. Minerals and vitamins are called micronutrients (because micro means small). The body needs only small amounts of these nutrients. Water is the most important nutrient. Our bodies can survive without other nutrients for several weeks, but we can only go without water for about one week. Water is needed in great amounts because the body consists largely of water. Between 50 and 75 percent of a normal person's body weight is made up of water. The body needs water to carry out all of its life processes. Watery solutions help dissolve other nutrients and carry them to all of the tissues. The body also needs water to carry away waste products and to cool itself. Adults should drink about 2 1/2 quarts of water every day. The carbohydrates, fats, and proteins are needed because they have nutrients which provide energy. Carbohydrates include all sugars and starches. They are the main source of energy for living things. There are two types of carbohydrates, simple and complex. Simple carbohydrates include sugars and have a simple molecular structure. Complex carbohydrates include starches and have a larger and more complicated molecular structure. The structure consists of many simple carbohydrates linked together. Fats are a highly concentrated source of energy. All fats are composed of an alcohol called glycerol and substances called fatty acids. A fatty acid consists of a long chain of carbon atoms. There are three types of fatty acids.

Briar Rose :: essays research papers
Jane Yolsen produces a powerful and moving novel that deftly blends the legend of Sleeping Beauty with the historical tragedy of the Holocaust. To Rebecca, Sylvia and Shana, "Briar Rose" was simply a bed time story but in all reality the story they grew up with was an actual event in Gemma's life. Although Gemma always identified strongly with Briar Rose, the sleeping princess, no one had thought it anything but a bedtime story. But when a mysterious box of clippings and photos turns up after Gemma's death, hinting that the accepted version of Gemma's origins is untrue, Becca begins tracing the real story, which bears striking resemblance's to Gemma's fairy tale. Becca then sets off on a journey to Europe to discover her grandmother's true identity. I felt this book was more for adults than for young adults. It was complicated and probably difficult for a young teen to follow. It had language that may not suitable for a young adult. Such as a line like, "Stan expertly braked and simultaneously turned the wheel slightly to the right. "Asshole!" he muttered." (Jane Yolen, 67). It was a remarkable book. I usually don't enjoy reading what I "have" to, but I truly adored this book. When I first started the book I wasn't very enthused but once I read the first four chapters (for the second time) I started falling into the novel. I became so emotionally involved with the characters and the story that I had to finish it. It made me recall everything I had learned in history class about the Holocaust. At that time it did not seem to "click". Now that I read this story and all of its frightful horrors it all comes rushing back. Now that I think about it, this is actually a great book for young adults to read. It teaches them a little about the holocaust and the terrible tragedies that had occurred. It even teaches them a bit about homosexuality. Though the gays were not treated very well in Yolen's novel. I loved the detail that Yolen put into "Briar Rose". It felt like I was actually there, staring down at the mountain of bodies below. Smelling the putrid smell of week old rotting corpses. Sleeping in a trench covered with branches and leaves, with nine to thirteen other escapees, aching for a shower and food in my stomach.

Animal Species Essay
1. On the diagram below, what percentage of energy (from the choices in blue on the left) is transferred from a producer to a: (A) secondary consumer, (B) tertiary consumer, (C) quaternary consumer? The producer takes 100% from the sun then gives 10% to the primary consumer then 1% to the secondary consumer then .1% to the tertiary consumer and then .01% to the quaternary consumer. 2. Look at the quote from Rachel Carson on the first page. What do you think the quote means? Use some of the terms we have covered regarding the topic of food webs in your one to two paragraph explanation. ââ¬Å"All the life of the planet is inter-relatedâ⬠¦Ã each species has its own ties to others, andà â⬠¦all are related to the earth.â⬠I think sheââ¬â¢s referring to the consumption between the animals going all around the world and going to the past life, similar to earth because all the animals eventually die and are tied together on earth. The food chain connects everyone and everything together in some way which is key to life on earth. 3. Why is it beneficial that many predatory fish have larval and juvenile stages that feed at a low trophic level, while the adults feed at a tertiary or quaternary trophic level? Itââ¬â¢s beneficial because then theyââ¬â¢re not competing for the same food. If the juvenile are eating something different it will help them actually make it to adulthood. Also juvenile fish donââ¬â¢t have the same energy as the adults so they eat in the low trophic level because itââ¬â¢s an easier and safer feed. 4. Not all adults feed at a high trophic level. Whale sharks (50 ft) are the largest fish and feed on plankton and small fish, while Great White sharks (20 ft) are the largest carnivorous fish and feed on sea lions, seals and large fish. Blue whales (100 ft) are the largest whale and feed primarily on plankton and krill, while the Sperm whale (45 ft) is the largest carnivorous whale feeding on fish and very large squid. (a) How does the location of each animalââ¬â¢s position in relation to the producers contribute to their size? Be sure to look at the food chain and the amount of energy that is being transferred between the levels. ââ¬âI think the location of an animal correlates with ones size because if you think of a wale compared to costal fish you know they canââ¬â¢t eat the same things considering a wale being right offshore is highly unlikely. Plus the larger animals (like a whale) wonââ¬â¢t have as much energyà as a smaller animal to catch its food so they would eat in the low trophic level because itââ¬â¢s easier to get, and takes less energy. (b) Why do you suppose the plankton feeders are able to attain such large sizes compared to the carnivores? ââ¬âThe main reason I feel that plankton eaters are able to attain such large sizes is because plankton are not a hard catch compared to trying to catch a seal or chase a school of fish. Plankton eaters can eat a lot more, while saving energy, which is perfect for bigger animals.
Finally the Smoke Cleared and I Could See
Majbritt Dietrich 24/2/13 composition starting with ââ¬Å"Finally the smoke cleared and I could seeâ⬠Finally the smoke cleared and I could see what I think Iââ¬â¢ve been looking for, for five yearsâ⬠¦ I saw a small, abandoned house, which was run down and you could see dead ivy along the tattered walls. It was a little haunting but I promised myself and my sister in law I would help find my two nieces that had made a giant mistake five years agoâ⬠¦ He drove out here, into the middle of no where and just dropped his two daughters off in this house and left them to live by themselves, they were no older than 3 years oldâ⬠¦ He then just left and kept on driving, Iââ¬â¢m guessing this was all planned as he then drove into a big truck at least twice the size of his car, and killed himself. We all were devastated. I walked into the house, not knowing what would expect me, I looked around and heard a noise.I stood completely still not even daring to breathe. I heard it again, it was like a soft whispering noise, I moved my shaking head, to see patterns developing on the wall, I was totally confused. A little girl peeped her head around the old wall and ran to attack me. I knew it was one of my nieces. The first thing I had noticed was she obviously hadnââ¬â¢t developed the way a normal girl her age would have. I called the police and managed to stutter the address. During the mean time I was studying the forever changing patterns on the wall. The two girls were running their hands along the wall as if the wall was a person. It was worrying me. I took pictures with my phone but when I went to look at them, the patterns that were on the wall had kind of disappearedâ⬠¦as if it were a ghost or a spirit, perhaps a soul stuck in the house? Either way it was scaring me. The police took a while; as the house was very difficult to find. It did take me five whole years to find it. But when the police finally were here they were as shocked as I was. They tried to catch the girls and put them in the back of the new police car, thankfully there was a cage splitting the front and back leather seats, as the girls were the complete opposite of calm. The girls were brought into a clinic and were examined by specialists. They were totally quiet and thought bad of my brother straight away. The girls were both kept in the clinic for a couple of weeks until an old specialist said to me there was nothing more they could do and it would be a good idea if the two girls stayed with me as they knew me. So the girls were brought to my house and process was made, both girls started to speak as the recognised things they had seen before when they had visited me. My partner Denise on the other hand was a bit afraid of them, but tried to act as motherly as possible. Both girls slept in the same room and got along fine with each other. They kept waking up at night, and spoke to the closet. It made absolutely no sense to Denise or me. One night both of us snuck up in front of their door and tried to listen to what they were saying but as soon as 1 second after we had arrived we heard a load screeching and immediately backed away and the screeching stopped. The girls ran out and screamed ââ¬Å"you donââ¬â¢t know Mama, youââ¬â¢re not allowed to listen, sheââ¬â¢ll get jealous! â⬠but Denise and I were totally freaked out and slowly closed the door again and walked back to our bedroom, totally out of energy. The next morning Denise snuck into the girlââ¬â¢s room and wanted to look into the closet and she was so curious about what had happened last night. The same patterns that were on the walls in the house the girl were found in appeared on the walls of the girlââ¬â¢s bedroom here too. Whispering started again, the exact same whispering as in the house before too. One of the girls came in ââ¬Å"donââ¬â¢t open it, Mama will get madâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Denise started to get uncomfortable and walked back out and tal ked to her husband about it, the girlââ¬â¢s uncle. The girls were questioned about ââ¬ËMamaââ¬â¢ and said that she is a spirit that appears where ever she wants and can do what she wants. She takes care of the two girls apparently, but really what she wants is to get her child back. In 1485 she was accused of being a witch and was sentenced to death. Her baby was taken from her and was burnt. All she wants is to have her baby buried and to be with herâ⬠¦ one of the girls explained. Denise looked at her husband confused ââ¬Å"okayâ⬠¦ girls are you sure sheââ¬â¢s real? â⬠the girls just looked at each other and said ââ¬Å"donââ¬â¢t say sheââ¬â¢s not, she really is real and will get mad if you talk bad about her! . The walls began to fill with the same patterns again and the screeching started too once again. ââ¬Å"You made Mama mad! â⬠. ââ¬Å"Okayâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Denise began to shake. ââ¬Å"What if we burry her baby? â⬠the girls looked scar ed. The patterns began to disappear. The girls replied and said ââ¬Å"maybe that could workâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ . We walked to the woods where Mama was once burned at the stake. ââ¬Å"Girls do you have any idea where her baby could be? â⬠they both shook their heads, barely moving. Denise spotted an old ruin that could maybe have been the house where Mama could have lived. We got a priest and said the ceremony that would be said at a funeral.Patterns started fill the trees, and the ruin, they began to run along our bodies, it wasnââ¬â¢t a bad feeling; it was more of a thank you we thought. The two girls from then on were completely normal and were capable of going to a normal school nearby. They lived with Denise and their uncle and visited the graves of their father and mother, more their motherââ¬â¢s though as they couldnââ¬â¢t understand why their father had down that to them, but still knew there would have been a reason. But in the end they werenââ¬â¢t as damaged as the specialists had said, and it was only Mama who was in them.

Privilege: Racism and Jim Crow Laws Essay
The essay ââ¬Å"White Privilege and Male Privilegeâ⬠written by Peggy McIntosh was enlightening and controversial. It was enlightening because she shows you how certain groups of people can have privilege over other different groups, and be unaware or in denial over it. Peggyââ¬â¢s story was controversial because it talked about the privilege that very few have the courage to talk about. The white and male privilege and the fact that it is looming over our heads as a society. Throughout history thereââ¬â¢s a superior and inferior race and sex. The superior race is the white race, opposed to the African Americans who are considered the inferior. Additionally men are the superior sex opposed to women. Race is a sensitive subject when discussed due to the painful history of our country, most notably the plight of African Americans. African Americans have had a painful background of slavery and inequalities along with unjust rights they had to endure. They were not considered humans, but were property of their white slave owners. Racism has been social constructed for many decades. It is possible that the racial hierarchy can control many aspects of the human life. It can control what kind of jobs you receive, politics, media, insurance, and even your place of residence; this is reminiscent of the Jim Crow laws. Jim Crow laws were not only anti black laws but a way of life predominantly for southern people. The Jim Crow laws were constructed to keep African Americans from climbing higher on the social ladder. Education, transportation and work were kept at a bare minimum for African Americans. Under no means necessary was any African American to act as if they were equal to the white race. It ultimately controlled where they were allowed to go and what they were allowed to do. If for any reason this law was broken, consequences were normally enforced by physical force consequences for challenging whites and their authority. This was a way for the whites to maintain dominance and ensure the African Americans stayed at the bottom of the racial hierarchy. This was the cost for being born black. For being born into a society where your race was the ultimate factor in your social status, and rather than being born into a world of acceptance, you were born into a world of exile. This portrays in the United States the black and white color lines that have been imbedded into our minds and enforced due to the dominance of the white race for so long. Men also have advantages over women, especially politically. Even though times have changed and women are able to vote, men still are the dominating force in politics. Women have to fight longer, harder and be three times more qualified than a man to get some positions or to even qualify for jobs over a man. When some women are appointed higher positions over men they get criticized and sometimes even degraded because of it. Some men donââ¬â¢t even see or recognize when this occurs. Many white people are in denial of preconceived notions that they might have on a certain person or group because of their race. I myself have been a victim of racism at work. People choose to believe the color of your skin indicates your worth. Some expect you to fail and not succeed because of this. They expect you to meet the standard of the person they have seen on TV, in a movie, or on the radio. However, what they donââ¬â¢t realize is that these are stereotypes that the media portray of a certain group and that perception is not always accurate. They also take a bad experience with one individual, and deem an entire race that way. No one knows why we come in so many shades sizes and variations. However, we do know that the social concepts of race deprives from the history that one has come from. Race as well as the sex of a person was once used as a tactic of fear, fear that was instilled in a person to make them powerless and inferior to another race. Although many things have changed for the better in our society, racism and the sex of a person is still a dominate factor.

Jeffersonian Republicans vs. Federalists
In regards to the United States constitution, Jeffersonian Republicans have been known as strict constructionists who had a narrow interpretation of the constitution following it to an extreme power. This was in opposition to the Federalists who had often followed a loose construction policy. And to a certain extent, the characterization of both of these parties was for the most part accurate during the presidencies of both Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Though these parties stay pretty true to popular beliefs, with Jeffersonian Republicans being strict and Federalists being loose, at time this was proven to be in fact false.Thomas Jefferson and the Jeffersonian Republicans had become widely known as a strict constructionists even prior to the election of Jefferson. This is shown in a letter that Jefferson wrote to his colleague, and future cabinet member Gideon Granger which shows his true support for power to the states (Doc A. ) The letter states his strong feelings against t he power that the federal government held because he was fearful that if the federal government gained too much power and the states had too little power, then we would almost be creating a monarchy in the United States like Great Britain had done.Another prime example of his ideas of stronger state governments were stated in his letter to Samuel Miller in 1808 (Doc B. ) Jefferson firmly believed that he had no business in involving himself with religious activities as president as the Constitution had made no mention of such activities and therefore followed his strict construction principle by delegating those powers to the states. However, though Jefferson was a man who was mostly stuck to his principles of strict construction, there were often times were he would abandon his beliefs for what he believed was better for the nation.A prime example of such was during the Louisiana Purchase. Jefferson had to make the final call on whether or not to take this giant mass of land and do uble the size of the United States, though he faced one major problem. Nowhere in the constitution did it state that Jefferson could solely purchase land for the country without consent, which forced him loosely interpret the constitution and use the ââ¬Å"elastic clauseâ⬠because this was believed to be necessary and proper for the nation.During Madisonââ¬â¢s presidency, he also was able to stick to his principles of Jeffersonian Republicanism to a certain extent. In 1817, James Madison had addressed Congress following his vetoing of an Internal Improvements Bill due to his views of strict construction (Doc H. ) He believed that though this bill would in some respects help the country, the president was not given direct consent by the constitution to create roads and canals and control commerce. His belief in strict construction had forced him to make the ultimate decision of vetoing the bill. Henceforth, though Jefferson and Madison did mostly follow closely to the beliefs that Jeffersonian Republican party were founded on, they did not fully carry them out with some actions not corresponding to the initial ideals. The Jeffersonian Republican party was not the only party that had to wiggle their way around their initial ideas as the Federalist party was also partially facing difficulties at times. In 1814, when Congress was discussing a conscription bill that would enforce a draft of all men into the army, Daniel Webster (federalist) had violated his loose construction policy in an effort to fight this bill (Doc D. ) Webster had argued that nowhere in the constitution was it stated that a draft could be created and if such a law was passed, Congress would also have the power to create a dictator as well.Though he did believe in the idea that all Americans followed that went against a dictatorship, he abandoned his federalist ideas of loose construction in order to avoid a draft, even though it may have been ââ¬Å"necessary and properâ⬠. Federali sts were also having troubles in their party when they publically made their troubles clear during the Hartford Convention in 1815 (Doc E. ) Federalists had almost clearly trashed their party ideas and sided with the Jeffersonian Republicans when in many of their remarks they had called for a weak central government. For example, when the Embargo Act was destroying the American economy, the Federalists wanted to take away power from Congress by creating an amendment which would take away all embargos and any trade with any foreign country without a two-thirds majority of both houses. Usually they would be against this as they believed in a strong central government, but they completely contradicted themselves at the Hartford Convention making no progress and eventually the downfall of the Federalist party. Therefore, the Federalists had an extremely hard time staying true to their own ideals. The Federalists and Jeffersonian Republicans had developed a polar opposite view of the const itution and government. One had devoted their views to strong state government and the other to strong central government. Jeffersonian Republicans (led by Jefferson and Madison), though wanting to stick to their ideas, faced much adversity when wanting to remain strict constructionists.Yet fortunately for them they proved the characterization of their party to be for the most part accurate. The Federalists did face much more problems as they would often contradict themselves and abandon their policies of loose constructions as shown during the presidencies of Jefferson and Madison. It is almost impossible to follow a partyââ¬â¢s principles to an extreme extent, as seen by both parties, so it is necessary for both to adjust to find a balance that would ultimately benefit the people of the nation.

Sammuri Argumentative Essay
Samurais Argumentative essay Samurais were a vital part of Japanese culture and should have been allowed to continue. Although there were dangerous aspects of this tradition, it was also a large part of Japanese culture. As time passed, their existence had gradually lessened, resulting in their loss. Although the Samurai ways are no longer practiced, they have left a legacy that keeps on affecting the lives of people in Japan today. The traditions of the samurai still have an influence on the lives of the Japanese people.Whether it is through the martial arts, the peaceful arts, or their beliefs, the samurai continue to influence life to this day. The Samuraiââ¬â¢s ethics are major in Japanese society as well as business; the idea of Bushido exists in society today as the Japanese business ethics illustrate honor and duty to Japan. To be a Samurai was a huge honor and it took an abundance of training and extensive hours of practice. Samurais had to be completely dedicated to their lifestyle; they repeated their schedule day after day: wake up in the Samurai village, meditation, hours of training, dinner, and sleep.Their routine was very rigorous however; it was compensated when they went into battle. Samurais were an elite group of warriors who were very skilled in battle and killing. Many may say that the Samurais were very violent and provocative group, however, the Samurais were always on the defensive. Though the entire movie, the Samurais never picked the fight, it was always the Americans- or in any case, it was never the Samurais who were picking the fights. The Samuraisââ¬â¢ code of honor, Bushido, was much like a knightsââ¬â¢ code of honor, chivalry; the only difference was ââ¬Å"seppukuâ⬠.Seppuku was the traditional suicide after a battle was lost. The leader of the losing team was to commit suicide by carving a figure 8 into his abdomen because he shouldnââ¬â¢t live with the shame of losing a battle. If the man could not complete th e figure 8, the leader of the opposing side would cut off the loserââ¬â¢s head. This was all part of honor; however, many people saw it as barbaric and couldnââ¬â¢t understand this ritual. The Samurai were trained warriors and their job was to kill predators so any way they are viewed; they were still violent peoples so in a way it was a good thing that the tradition was discontinued. The weapons the Samurais used were swords, bow and arrows, and a spear; no fire arms. In the movie, The Last Samurai, it was said that the ââ¬Å"sword is part of the soulâ⬠. The Japanese took this very seriously; training took up most of a warriorsââ¬â¢ day. The samurai rose to power out of the constant fight for land in feudal Japan. They became experts at fighting from horseback and on the ground. They trained in armed and unarmed combat. They wore many layers of armor and used only the sword passed down from previous generations. As mentioned previously, the Samurai were trained warrior s and their job was to kill predators so in a way it was a good thing that the tradition was discontinued. However, much like the Samurai, soldiers fighting the war today are much more aggressive than the Samurai and they are armed with much more lethal weapons than a sword. Others may view this as hypocritical that the centuries long tradition was put to an end yet we continue to fight and kill to get what we need; we arenââ¬â¢t even fighting to protect our people like the Samurais were, we are fighting for something that we want.
